In the 16th, 17th and18th century, the demand for raw material to make canvas and ropes for the shipping industry in Colonial America was so high that it a law and compulsory for every householder to grow hemp. In fact, in Virginia, you could be jailed for refusing to grow hemp from 1763 to 1769.
